The Administrative City built by the government of the state of Minas Gerais, located along the so called Linha Verde (Green Line) which leads to Confins airport and is signed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, may feature in the Record Book: it has the largest clear dimension in suspended concrete worldwide - 148 meters. That was possible thanks to the use of steel cordage produced by Belgo Bekaert Arames, an ArcelorMittal Group company in joint venture with Bekaert, a Belgium company.
ArcelorMittal Long Carbon Steel in Brasil supplied 10.7 thousand tons of products for the construction, more than 60% of the total amount of steel used in the Administrative City. Just to have an idea, such quantity is 6% more than the total weight of the Eiffel Tower. Considering only cordage for prestressed concrete (concrete in which internal tension or forces are introduced through stretched cordage), the Administrative City consumed around one thousand and five hundred tons.
The company also provided more than 9.2 thousand tons of rebars (CA50 and CA60), nails, annealed wire (for rebars fastening), mesh and Murfor. Muffor is a steel reinforcement shaped like a flat truss with galvanized wire used between the brickwork rows (lines between the overlaid concrete blooms), aiming at improving the structural performance of the brickwork itself, generating more safety against cracks. It was the solution adopted in the two buildings that hold the Government Secretaries.
