A more efficient use and the reduction of energy consumption are goals of ArcelorMittal Brasil. In 2008 for the second consecutive year, the Company managed to reduce its consumption rates although it increased its steel production.
Concerning electric power, ArcelorMittal Tubarão is self sufficient, generating energy by reusing gases from the productive process and the thermoelectric plant located beside Sol Coqueria, a company controlled by ArcelorMittal Brasil, which produces metallurgical coke. Tubarão has a capacity to generate 490 megawatts, which ensures a significant income by selling the exceeding energy. In 2008, the company was considered the second major self energy producer of the country.
the Long Steel sector, ArcelorMittal Juiz de Fora (MG) has reduced the charcoal consumption in its two blast furnaces through the use of fines, and ArcelorMittal Florestas is developing a system to use methane gas during the eucalyptus wood carbonization process for the charcoal production.
