Environment

The ArcelorMittal Brasil vision of sustainability determines a balance of obtaining profits together with reaching ambitious goals of environmental sustainability, employee appreciation and refining the relationship between the company, the communities in which it is installed and all interested parties.

In the environmental area ArcelorMittal Brasil is not limited to complying with present legislation. The company invests in process improvement actions, continuous modernization of industrial installations and in preserving biodiversity.

The companies which form ArcelorMittal Brasil ration the use of water in their operations and the rate of reuse is about 98%. Electricity generation is also an important feature both by means of reutilization of gases originating from the production process or through the company’s own generation. ArcelorMittal Aços Longos has a hydroelectric station which partially supplies the necessities of its unit located in Monlevade (MG), while ArcelorMittal Tubarão has four thermoelectric centers making it self-sufficient in this area.

ArcelorMittal Brasil also serves as a benchmark for its industrial waste management in the steel-producing sector. The reutilization of waste originating from production is above 95%, well above the average of 80% in this sector. From an annual production of 10 million tons of steel, 3.7 million tons of waste and co-products, which are recycled, are generated.

All the companies and units have ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS international standard certificates related to quality, environment, occupational health and security management.
