Environmental Education
The ArcelorMittal Brasil companies keep environmental education programs which are held internally and for the communities where their facilities are located. The Environmental Education Centers promote the visits of students and members of the communities involved in actions aimed at awakening critical awareness and changing environmental behavior.
They also have the Private Reserves of Private Patrimony (PRPPs), besides developing projects to protect natural resources in partnership with public entities.
Among the environmental education initiatives we can highlight the following:
- Environmental Communication Program, a partnership between ArcelorMittal Tubarão and private and public schools which enables a reflection of teachers and students towards environmental awareness. In 2008, 125 schools were involved - since its beginning the program has benefited more than 100 thousand students.
- ArcelorMittal Brasil Environment Award, a contest of compositions and drawings also for students, held since 1992 by ArcelorMittal Aços Longos and aimed at promoting debate on environmental and sustainability matters that affect society. Since its creation the Award has accounted for more than 4 million participations, involving almost seven thousand schools from 40 municipalities of the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Bahia and São Paulo.
- The School Contest, developed by ArcelorMittal Tubarão, in São Francisco do Sul (SC), contemplates eight thousand students from local schools and aims at making them aware of the importance to preserve the environment. At the same time, the company develops environmental courses for local teachers besides encouraging the cultivation of vegetable beds and gardens in the community.
