The company invests in research and development of the new uses for residues generated in productive processes, aiming at excellence and sustainability in steel production. The reuse indexes are above the sector's average and reference for ArcelorMittal Group.
At ArcelorMittal Tubarão in 2008, the reuse index of residues was 99,66%, out of which 64,2% were commercialized, generating revenues of R$ 86 million with the co-products sales for the industries of cement, chemicals, ceramics and railroads. In the Long Carbon sector, the reuse average was 86% and the revenue gained with co-products sales amounted R$ 22 million in Brazil, reaching an equivalent value of US$ 37 million also related to the units of Argentina, Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago - the company re-invests up to 15% of the revenue gained in the area developing new projects looking for new applications of its residues.
