In the Education area, the Quality Teaching Program (PEQ), coordinated by Fundação ArcelorMittal Brasil, became public policy in two municipalities of the state of Minas Gerais. The PEQ aims at improving the quality of elementary teaching by means of improving pedagogical processes and environmental management, and it results in better students' performance and reduction of grade repetition. In 2008, the Program involved 2,730 educators and benefited nearly 25 thousand students from 58 schools.
The Affection-Sexual Education Program (PEAS), also developed by Fundação ArcelorMittal Brasil, contributes to personal, social and productive development of teenagers, focusing on sexual and reproductive health. The initiative reaches 78 thousand students in public schools of cities in Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Bahia and São Paulo, and among its results it provides the reduction of unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, drug abuse and violence. Since its creation in 2000, the PEAS has already qualified more than 800 educators besides thousands of students.
The Social Educational Qualification Program (Procap), from ArcelorMittal Tubarão, focuses on teenagers from 15 to 18 years of age. The youngsters have the opportunity to have internships at the company and have benefits such as English classes and professionalizing courses.
