Waste and Coproducts

The continuous search for improvements has led the Arcelor Brasil companies to prioritize three kinds of programs: minimal generation, maximum use and recycling, and reduction of discard.

Our employees' awareness and the strategy of considering the potential of waste generation in every operational decision are determining factors for the efficiency of the present management. Our work encompasses everything, from looking for the appropriate suppliers to developing new ways of using the generated wasted.

Since 2002, CST has recorded a rate of waste generation below 550 kg/ metric ton of steel produced, as well as a waste and co product reuse and commercialization rate that is above 95%.

Amongst the Arcelor Brasil initiatives for making the most of the waste generated by its industrial processes, we highlight:

  • The creation of Acerita, a co product manufactured from a new way of processing the steel slag generated at CST. Launched in 2002, Acerita is used as an alternative to crushed rock in paving roads. In addition to saving natural resources, it has advantages in terms of cost, strength, and durability.

  • Reuse of the slag from the blast furnace of the Monlevade mill (state of Minas Gerais) in the cement industry. That allows for the substitution of non-renewable natural resources, the addition of value to that kind of waste, and the contribution to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere.

  • Recovery of the zinc and lead contained in waste generated in the wire and bar lines in Contagem (state of Minas Gerais).

  • The BBA - Belgo Bekaert Arames (Belgo Bekaert Wires), a company that is a subsidiary of Belgo in Contagem (state of Minas Gerais), uses the cakes produced by the effluent treatment station as an input for the red brick industry, which is highly valued in the market.

  • Also in Contagem (state of Minas Gerais), the installation of a station for recuperating sulphuric acid and ferrous sulphate allows for 100% reuse of this effluent. Hence, the environmental impact resulting from the discharge of these substances is eliminated.

  • In Sabará (state of Minas Gerais), the BBA plant treats iron powder that is stocked in impermeable cells at the waste yard, aiming at turning waste into input for blast furnaces.
